Categories are used to group posts in Wordpress. You can make as many categories as you want, like, category for sports, world news, science, cooking, etc. And then you can make new posts and add them in their respective category, and at last you can display these categories in your website menu like a menu item "sports" and when users will click on that menu item he/she will see all posts in that specific category.
So this is the main concept of categories in Wordpress and how you can use categories to make a news/blogging website easily.
